Description

The Ni-Wumpf GTB sound board was designed to provide a replacement for several of the early Gottlieb sound boards, from the tone cards that saw production with Solar Ride right out to the System 80B sound card for Tag Team.   There are 35 different games that use these boards. These includes the 555 “tone” board, the first generation “multi-mode” sound board, the MA-55 board used in System 80 games, and the MA-490 – basically all sound boards that used a 6503 and the 6530 MIOT chip.  With three connectors on the board, it can connect with the System 1 games, with the tone connection at the bottom, and the normal connector on the left, while the right connector is for the System 80 games.

Like the new System 80 CPU, this board uses the original Gottlieb firmware in reproducing the sound board functionality in all aspects; it provides a DIP switch to enable the attract mode, and another to select the sound/tone versions of the original sounds.   And also like that board, the code must be licensed on the separate microSD card.

It does not reproduce the simple tones of the tone card though, so if you want 555 tones, spend the $50 on a tone card on eBay, but if you want a rich sound theme for these games, you’re looking in the right direction.

The intent is to provide users with not just a replacement sound board for these games, but the ability to create, and load your own .wav sound files into the system.  …to create a sound theme for the game they never had.  Sound themes are being developed for many of the System 1 games (though not so easily for the System 80 games), and they involve signaling the sound board to play a specific sound for a specific switch – like modern pinball games do.  This is achieved by a signaling protocol between the Ni-Wumpf CPU and the sound board.  Themes cannot be supported with any other System 1 CPU, and the revision level on the Ni-Wumpf System 1 CPU must be 2.70 or above (there is no charge to upgrade Ni-Wumpf CPUs to the latest revision of software if they are sent in – just the return shipping).  In this protocol, each switch has 9 possible sounds, one each for the point scoring of the switch (remember pop-bumpers score 100 or 1000 points in many cases), and three entries for that scoring sound selected randomly.  i.e. rebound rubbers, scoring 10 points can respond with three sounds now, randomly selected.

To be clear – this board is supported for the following games only; Totem, Hulk, Genie, Buck Rogers, Torch, Roller Disco, Asteroid Annie, Spiderman, Panthera, Circus, Counterforce, Star Race, James Bond, Time Line, Force II, Pink Panther, Eclipse, Amazon Hunt, Rack ’em Up, Ready Aim Fire, Jacks to Open, Alien Star, The Games, Touchdown, Eldorado, Ice Fever, Chicago Cubs, Bounty Hunter, Tag Team, Close Encounters, Dragon, Charlies Angels, Solar Ride, and Countdown, it cannot be used in earlier System 1 games that are EM, or have the chime box (there is no speaker in the cabinet!)

Note: on the system 80 games – there is a limitation to the sound theme; the sound board supports remapping sounds for the original 15 sound tunes on the game, but will only support switch-specific sounds on the earlier Ni-Wumpf CPU (not the new GTB licensed boards).

Troubleshooting

The sound board is a user-oriented device meant to produce sound themes for the System 1 games, and as such, can generate some confusion in getting the sounds just right.  It is critical to read the user manual when confronted with something that is not working as expected.  Here are some of the common challenges:

  • sounds produced are clipped, rapid noise, with most sounds seeming to be pretty much the same.  This is a result of the Ni-Wumpf CPU being configured to use the Ni-Wumpf sound theme mode, but the sound board is configured to run the original GTB sounds.
  • sounds played are the default sounds instead of the desired game theme selected by the DIP switch.
    • DIP is incorrectly set to a game that has no current sound theme
    • DIP switch 7 is set on, in Ni-Wumpf sound mode, and one of the tone board games is selected.
    • there is no sound theme developed for this game yet.
    • SD card is corrupt, or directory for that game is missing / deleted.
  • LED flashes continually at start-up: the SD card is not missing, not the correct Ni-Wumpf firmware, corrupt, on not inserted correctly. Try to re-insert the SD card.

Please refer to the manual for more troubleshooting steps.
